General Care Tips

General Care Tips
Quality clothing deserves quality care. Here are a few general tips for taking better care of your fashion items.  Please note that not every item you purchase can be treated the same way depending on the item's material and style.  The information below only offers some general guidance.

Read the Label: Clothing labels contain valuable information about proper washing, drying, and ironing methods for each item.  You should always consult the label before washing (or purchasing) a fashion item. Also, do not neglect to read the labels of detergents and other laundry products for proper usage instructions. Note that some YesStyle items may have labels in foreign languages; the material and care information is available online on the product pages.  You can also refer to Laundry Information.  Washing: Separation is key.  Light colored garments should be washed in warm or hot water while bright and dark colored garments should be washed in cold water to help preserve color.  Light colored items may pick up unwanted dye coloration if washed with darker items.  Man-made fabrics (polyester, rayon, spandex) should be washed separately from natural fibers (cottons).  Delicate and lint-generating items also deserve their own loads.  Make sure to not overload the washer and try to distribute various-sized clothing items in each load, so that they can move freely during the wash cycle.

Laundry Products: Choose your detergents carefully and follow the recommended quantity per washload.  Too much detergent can accelerate the fading and aging of textiles and leave detergent residues.

Bleach helps remove stains and restore brightness and whiteness to fabrics.  Chlorine bleach is appropriate for white and colorfast items.  It should not be used, however, on items with spandex, wool, silk, or specialty fibers like mohair, angora, and cashmere. If you are not sure whether a fabric is colorfast, it is best to use non-chlorine (oxygen) bleach, which is generally safe for all fabrics.  Many detergents now come with color-safe bleach.

Fabric softeners soften clothing, reduce static cling and wrinkling, and add a pleasant scent.  Liquid softeners, however, should be used sparingly.  Overuse can cause discoloration and reduce fabric absorbency.

Drying: As with washing, keep different fabrics in separate loads and do not overload the machine.  Shake out items before placing in dryer for reduced wrinkling.  Make sure to follow the recommended drying instructions on the clothing labels.  Fabrics with low moisture absorbency, such as acrylic, nylon, and polyester, should be dried at a low heat setting.  Drying for too long or at overly high temperatures can cause shrinkage.
